On December 3, 2017 – one of the largest Beijing underpass of Pakistan was inaugurated by Chief Minister Punjab, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif. It was a timely decision by Punjab Government to establish this underpass at Canal Road. Especially when traffic problems are at constant rise. Mainly due to lack of infrastructure.
Beijing underpass is about 1.3km long. Creating easy linkage from Dharampura to Mughalpura. The project took almost 125 days for its completion. Finally, having its official ceremony of inauguration by the Punjab Government and now will be open for traffic
After the ceremony, CM Punjab – Mr. Shehbaz Sharif visited the underpass himself and thoroughly inspected it. Making sure about the quality of work. He further spoke to media mentioning that Beijing Underpass is one of the biggest projects in Pakistan till the date. Indeed, being one of its kind. Having height of 5.1 meters. The project will provide a hassle-free flow of traffic from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbans Pura, having no traffic signals. Also, since the connecting roads are more of a need for heavy traffics. This underpass is designed by Punjab Government taking exclusive care that almost any type of traffic can pass through it. Irrespective of height and weight.In this project, railway vehicles have also been taken care of. Making separate passage for them, facilitating railways transportation as well.
The main aim of naming it as Beijing Underpass by Punjab government is to strengthen the bond between Pakistan – China. Therefore, naming it after the capital city of China. The project was even inaugurated in the presence of General Consulate of China, His Excellency Long Ding Bin.
Beijing Underpass have many high hopes attached to it. Punjab government took this as a gateway to new opportunities and developments. The project will help to build new pathways for economic activities. The completion of the project is a result of Punjab Government hard work. It was also mentioned by LDA DG in a briefing to CM Punjab that the project is completed in short span of time. This would not have been possible if the employees did not work around the clock.
